Hosting

A couple of years ago I created a IPSec tunnel betweem my RoadLAB and HomeLAB so I could access my home network and use my home as a my breakout online. In effect I was home. However it turned out to be a fragile setup. More often then not did it not really work. I never got the traffic from my Apple TV to go really go through the tunnel. We want to use the Delta TV Apple TV app also from our remote location. Using the iPad app works, when using the tvOS app, it complains that it needs to be on the Delta network. Since 2014 did I have a simple server (droplet) at DO. In December 2020 I migrated to FreeBSD as the host OS. However with the move into a pre-rendered website using Publii I no longer need a full fledged server. Just some space where I can let the site be hosted as is. Since I made the move for our email to Strato earlier this year, let’s see what the possibilities are. ...

My server was still running Ubuntu 18.04 LTS, so time to think about upgrading the OS. Besides the upgrading I was a bit fed-up with the whole Wordpress setup. Not really happy with the product. So how to solve these two issues? After a hiatus of around 12 years back into using FreeBSD as the OS on the server. In a couple of hours I setup a new droplet with FreeBSD as host OS. Pretty simple and memory muscle returned. Did get myself a nice book on the topic: “Absolute FreeBSD, third Edition” To me more of a nice reference book. Help full that is for sure. ...
